Can Not or Will Not?

Many are those who demand proof for the truthfulness of Christianity. In fact, I was having coffee the other day with a man who said, “If you can show me beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus is God, I would be happy to believe in Him.” And yet, in contradiction to his demand for proof, Jesus did many signs and wonders over the course of His ministry and yet people constantly refused to believe in Him.

John 12:37 tells us, “that though He had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in Him.” Jesus healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, raised the dead to life, and fed thousands upon thousands, all right in front of these people, proving that He was God, and yet they refused to believe in Him. So Jesus’ life and ministry calls the skeptic’s bluff; and His teaching throws the issue right back at them. They say that they can’t believe because of a lack of evidence, but Jesus says that they won’t believe because of a lack of willingness. In fact, John 12:43 explains, “They loved the glory of man more than the glory of God.” So for them, it’s not an issue of can’t believe, but won’t believe. But how about you, is there enough evidence for you to believe?

Something to think about from the Proclamation point of view.
