Life Stinks and then You Die!

Life Stinks and then You Die!

“Life stinks and then you die!”  At least that’s the view of a cynical bumper sticker that I just saw the other day.  Now why do you think its author would characterize life in such hopeless and meaningless terms?  And more importantly, is it a true statement?  Is that all there is?  Or does life have a greater purpose?

Well, according to the Christians who wrote the Westminster Confession of faith, “The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.”  Now certainly much more could be said about this statement, but at least one thing must be said.  According to these Christians, the purpose of life is found in relationship to God.  Our greatest purpose is to enjoy God and to glorify God, which means that we must certainly know God.  You can’t enjoy someone you don’t know.  And Jesus brings that idea to even greater clarity in John 17:3 when He says, “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”  So maybe the reason that some don’t enjoy their relationship with God is because they don’t really have a relationship with God, and they don’t know Jesus Christ whom God has sent.

Something to think about from the Proclamation point of view.
